20th Annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day Set for Wednesday, May 29

On Wednesday, May 29, more than 100,000 older adults will participate in local health and wellness events at 1,000+ locations across the country as part of the 20th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day.
The event is always held the last Wednesday in May as part of Older Americans Month and National Physical Fitness and Sports Month activities.
The goal: To promote the importance of regular physical activity, and to showcase what local groups are doing to help improve the health of older adults in their communities.
Groups hosting 2013 Senior Day events include senior centers; retirement communities; Ys and health clubs; health plans, hospitals and health systems; park and recreation districts, and local aging organizations. Activities at the events include health fairs, exercise demonstrations, health screenings, nutrition tips, health presentations, and more. Organizations that wish to host local "Senior Day" events must register with the Mature Market Resource Center, the program organizer, in order to legally use the event name and logo, which are federal trademarks.
"This year is the 20th anniversary of National Senior Health & Fitness Day the nation's largest older adult health promotion event," adds Patricia Henze , executive director of the MMRC. She continues, "We are pleased to be working with a record number of national and state/regional sponsors to help support older adult health and wellness efforts through our unique event."
National event sponsors include: American Specialty Health's Silver&Fit Exercise and Healthy Aging Program, The American Diabetes Association, and American Custom Publishing.
State/Regional Event Sponsors include: UPMC Health Plan (PA), Florida Blue (FL), AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, insured by UnitedHealthcare Insurance Company (NJ), MedStar Medicare Choice (Washington, DC metro area), Health Net (CA), Aetna (TX), Kaiser Permanente (OR), and CareMore Health Plan (NV).
This year's National Senior Health & Fitness Day event also marks the debut of an updated version of the Mature Fitness AwardsUSA, the nation's first fitness recognition program specifically designed for older adults. This awards program is designed to help motivate older adults to improve their health through regular physical activity. American' Specialty Health's Silver&Fit program is the 2013 National Sponsor of the Mature Fitness Awards program.
